Why Does My Bird Bath Lose Water & How To Fix This Problem?

Outdoor water bird baths/fountains are a beautiful addition to any garden or backyard. The soothing sound of flowing water can create a tranquil atmosphere and add an elegant touch to any outdoor space. However, if you've noticed that your fountain is losing water, it can be a cause for concern. Don't worry, this can be a frustrating problem, but fortunately there are ways to prevent it. In this blog post, I'll explore few common reasons why your fountain may be losing water and provide you with some practical tips on how to prevent it.

1) EVAPORATION

The constant everyday exposure to sunlight and air can cause the water to evaporate over time. While a certain amount of evaporation is natural, excessive evaporation can lead to significant water loss.

SOLUTION:

Make sure to regularly top off your basin with fresh water. Also, if out in the open in the sunshine, consider to remove it to the shade to minimize evaporation process as much as possible. Finally, use water sealant suitable for basins as they add additional protection which in turn prevent water loss.

2) SPILLING & OVER SPLASHING WATER

Water in motion sounds really beautiful & scenic however too much motion in water flow can lead to increase of water loss.

SOLUTION:

Consider to adjust the flow of water if using the switch on a pump or position the nozzle in a way to prevent reckless motion of water. Also, make sure the water is not below the rim of the basin to prevent over-spillage

3) CRACKS IN THE BASIN

Over time, it is increasingly likely the foundation of the basin would crack. Every now and then, check for cracks or splits in the basin.

SOLUTION:

If there is cracks, use these steps to fix them-

- Drain the fountain: remove all water before fixing the issue. Once drained, look for the problem area(s)

- Clean the crack: use wire brush or sandpaper to smoother the crack and loose debris. Remove debris as you go

- Fill the crack: for fiberglass or stone water pieces, use clear silicone repair sealant material. For concrete, cement or any other material, use manufacturer-highly recommended epoxy which can be searched on Amazon or ebay

- sand & smooth the surface: once the crack is filled & you're happy with the result, use sandpaper to smooth the surface

- seal the surface basin- apply waterproof sealant on the whole of the surface to prevent future cracks & damage

4) WIND

Obviously, wind is strong force of nature so its not surprising if it blows the water off your basin

SOLUTION:

Move the water piece to area that is less prone to wind exposure especially during the autumn/winter season. If unavoidable, consider installing windbreak or privacy screen to restrict the wind gusts

5) SURROUNDING PLANTS OR VEGETATION

If there are plants or other vegetation growing on or really close to your fountain, they will also absorb the water and cause your fountain to drain more quickly.

SOLUTION:

Cut back & prune any plants near your fountain and make sure there is no contact with the water piece. Consider using a trellis for your nearby climbing plants

6) WATER HARDNESS & ALGAE

Depending where you're located in the country or area, there are different water qualities (soft, medium, hard etc). Algae could clog pipes if you have fountain

SOLUTION:

Consider using water treatment product or algae inhibitor to the water. Regularly cleaning your water piece will also prevent build up in algae or clogging issues

7) WILDLIFE & PETS

If your garden or outdoor area has alot of wildlife or animal activity, this could explain loss of water. Birds like to drink water & pets like cats do so too; leading to spillage or rapid loss of water

SOLUTION:

If you have pets who constantly go on the water piece, train them to avoid playing or being near them as much as possible. Consider using garden fence if really needed
