4 Ways To Clean Your Outdoor Water Fountain/Bird Bath

4 Ways To Clean Your Outdoor Water Fountain/Bird Bath

Fountains & bird baths are great additions to any outdoor/garden space and can become the prized centerpiece of your landscaping.  Whether you just installed your fountain or have owned one for years, following these best practices will help you keep your water running crystal clear all season.

1) Use cover

Water Fountain Cover

This option is viable if in windy, dusty or stormy environments. These conditions often bring fallen debris, leaves & twigs from nearby trees which fills up your fountain/bird bath over time. Also, insects may crawl over time in your fountain if exposed out in the open.

Using a suitable cover for your fountain/bird bath will be very helpful for whether you need it. Easy to install & remove when needed such as spring/summer season. Using this option prolongs the life of your fountain/bird bath & really must-have in garden or outdoor fountains

2) Keep water running

Running Water

The flowing motion of water makes it difficult for algae to grow & insects to breed. Prolonged time of not running water will enable the water currently in the fountain/bird bath to stagnant so creating perfect breeding ground for algae & insects.

The pump in the water fountain filters out such impurities so running it overnight or while away enables your water to remain clean for as long as possible.

If you do go away for extended periods of time, it is best advised to make sure to drain the water fountain to prevent such incidents happening in the first place.

3) Regular cleaning

Cleaning Items

Generally, around the pump is the first place you’ll begin to notice debris build-up. The pump is usually the only moving part of a fountain and as such requires a little extra attention. Fortunately, they’re designed to be easy to maintain. Simply remove the pump and wipe the outside clean with a sponge or cloth then remove the cover and clean out the inside with a toothbrush.

Once your pump is taken care of, give the rest of the fountain a similar treatment to ensure that your water stays clear as long as possible.

The frequency that you need to do this entirely depends on the size of your fountain, the time of year, and the part of the world you live in so experiment with intervals. If you find yourself removing a lot of grime, consider shortening the time between cleanings
